Blair Custom Pools and Fencing - Frequently Asked Questions

Pools & Spas

How much does a pool cost?
The price of the pool is dictated by the size, type of finish, pool accessories, type of material that the construction will take place in and budget.

How long does it typically take to build a pool?
Your typical pool/spa project will be completed within 30 to 45 days from excavation. Weather is a factor as is the scope of the project and unforeseen elements and add-ons. All of these have a direct bearing on the actual construction time frame.

How soon can you start construction on my pool?
Usually we are able to start a project within 1-2 weeks of finalizing the design. The time of year and number of current projects under construction are the major contributing factors, as well as required approvals and permits from the city.

What happens during excavation?
This is the process of forming and laying out the pool dimensions. When lay out is completed the excavators will remove the grass from the general pool area. Depending upon soil conditions the excavation of the pool will be completed within eight hours.

What is the forming and steel for?
The steel is the structural support of the pool. It plays an important role in not only structure as well as the bonding of the electrical ground. This process is inspected by the city to insure proper installation.

What is the next step and process after the steel is done?
Before the gunite is "shot" (a spraying process) into the pool, we will install all the stub plumbing which includes pool and spa drains and any pipes that will be inside the gunite wall including returns, cleaner lines, and water features, etc.

What is the "gunite" process?
This is very exciting to see for the first time. Normally this process involves a team of men that "shoot" the gunite (a type of concrete) through a pressurized hose into the excavation to create the inner shell of your new pool.

What else has to be done after the gunite is finished?
These phases of construction will be as follows; tile and coping, long plumb, electrical, decking, cleanup, sprinkler re-routes, fence re-install, and pool plaster.

You mentioned tile and coping, plaster and stone. Can you give me a bit more information on those?
Pool construction currently has a huge selection of natural stone tiles, slates, ceramics, and mosaics available. The pool coping (pool edge material) is in many cases created with natural stone, cast stone, and brick. Our stone masons are extremely talented and hard working craftsmen and very proud of their abilities. Their work is second to none in the industry. Putting on the plaster is a very difficult and quick process. It is blown onto the gunite and requires a hard working crew to smooth the surface quickly to assure a beautiful finish. The pool is then immediately filled with water.

What kind of pool equipment will you install?
We are a select partner with the Hayward program. We have personally dealt with Hayward for many years and have found their equipment to be of the best in the industry. They offer a wide variety of pool packages from pumps to controllers so your pool can be a Totally Hayward System. The advantage with this is that with any warranty items you are dealing with one manufacture supplier. Being a partner offers you a three-year extended warranty.

Fences

What type of wood do you recommend?
We use and recommend cedar pickets and rails. Cedar over time will last longer vs. using spruce material especially with our weather conditions in this area. Cedar is also the most attractive wood and is especially beautiful when coated with stain.

What type of fence posts do you use on wood fences?
We use and recommend metal posts. We always use the heavy .095 galvanized post. However, we can build your fence using pressure treated posts, cedar post, or the cheaper option being landscape timbers. Remember that the fence structure is very important and that is why we recommend metal.

Can you tear out and dispose of my old fence or deck?
Yes. We can teardown and haul away old fencing or decking for a small fee and include that with our final estimate. About 98% of the time we prefer to do this because it’s very hard work and dangerous to haul off.

Do you give free estimates?
Yes. In many situations if the customer can give us measurements over the phone we can do preliminary estimates by phone which can expedite the process. Later, to proceed with the project, we can come out and confirm the measurements and make any changes needed.

What purpose does a cap on my fence serve?
1. A cap strengthens the fence,
2. It protects the tops of post & boards,
3. A cap also enhances the beauty of the fence.

How wide should my gates be?
Thirty-six inches wide is standard but we like to build them at 40 inches to insure that there is enough room for wheelbarrow and lawnmower to get through without banging up the post.

How soon can we build the project?
This depends upon the time of year. We strive to get to your project as soon as possible. We tend to be out three to four weeks on our schedule in the spring and early summer. Winter time we can get a project done within a week. Winter time is the best time to build your fence or deck but we have to be patient with the weather at times.

What kind of stain should I use?
In this area there are several excellent sources. One that we like is Ready Seal, and you can view some of the available Ready Seal colors on our Fence Colors page.

How do I apply stain to my fence?
You can brush it on but the best method is to use Wagner or a pump-up garden sprayer, the same type that you would use for weed killer or insecticides.

How do I apply stain to my deck?
You can brush it on, roll it on, or spray it on. However, you need to apply it to a small area that you can easily reach and then immediately wipe off any excess. This is similar to putting an oil finish on a piece of furniture.

When is the best time to stain my fence or deck?
You want to let your fence or deck set for a few days in warm sunny weather so that the moisture will evaporate out of the wood. If you apply stain immediately there will be too much moisture in the wood for the stain to penetrate properly. If your project is being built in the winter, you will probably need to wait until spring to apply your stain. It’s not the rainy winter weather that destroys wood and turns it gray; it’s the hot summer sun.

How can I keep my fence and deck looking new?
By properly applying fence stain to your fence or UV deck stain to your deck you can keep your fence and deck looking great for years.

How much does a fence cost?
To find out what the cost of your project, please call us and we'll be glad to give you a free estimate. If you know the footage of your fence or deck project it will give you an approximate cost. Remember, the cost your deck or fence is usually outweighed by the enhanced value added to your home.
